What Therapy Entails: A Journey of Healing and Growth

(Pictures taken are with a model, not real clients).

Therapy can be one of the most supportive, transformative experiences of your life. It’s a safe, confidential space where you can talk about your thoughts, emotions, and experiences—without fear of judgment. Whether you're dealing with specific challenges, processing trauma, or simply wanting to understand yourself better, therapy can offer the support and tools you need to heal and grow.

In therapy, we’ll work together to explore what’s going on beneath the surface. We’ll look at patterns that might be holding you back and discover new ways to cope, process, and move forward. Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach—it’s tailored specifically to your needs and goals.

What’s the Goal of Therapy?

  • Understanding Your Challenges: Whether it’s stress, anxiety, relationship struggles, or trauma, we’ll uncover the root causes of these issues.

  • Healing and Building Resilience: Therapy helps you heal old wounds, develop healthier coping strategies, and work through difficult emotions.

  • Setting and Achieving Goals: Together, we’ll define the goals that matter most to you, whether it’s improving self-esteem, finding peace with past experiences, or learning how to regulate your emotions.

  • Empowering You: Ultimately, therapy is about giving you the tools to live a more fulfilling life, with a deeper understanding of yourself.

How Do We Work Together?

We’ll use different therapeutic approaches based on what resonates with you. Some of the methods I use include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helping you challenge and reframe negative thoughts and behaviors.

  • Schema Therapy: Exploring deep-rooted patterns formed in childhood and working through them.

  • EMDR: Processing trauma using guided eye movements to help integrate difficult memories.

  • EFT (Tapping): Using tapping techniques to release emotional tension and promote healing.

Preparing for Therapy: What You Can Do to Get Ready

It’s completely normal to feel nervous or uncertain before starting therapy. The good news is that preparation can help make the process smoother and more productive. Here are a few things to think about before your first session:

  1. Reflect on Why You’re Here:

Think about what brought you to therapy. What challenges are you facing? What would you like to change? It’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out—sometimes just starting with an open mind is enough.

  2. Be Honest About Your Concerns:

If you’re feeling anxious or unsure about something, bring it up. Therapy is a safe, non-judgmental space, and I want to know if anything is on your mind. Being open about your concerns allows us to address them early on and ensure the process is comfortable for you.

  3. Commit to the Process:

Therapy requires effort and patience. It can be challenging at times, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Be open to the process, and be kind to yourself as you move through it.

  4. Logistics:

Time and Space: Make sure you’ve scheduled time for your session when you can focus without feeling rushed afterward. If we’re meeting virtually, create a private space where you can talk freely.

  5. Paperwork and History: If I ask for forms or background information, filling them out ahead of time will give us a good starting point.

What to Expect in a Therapy Session: A Glimpse Into the Process

So, what does a typical therapy session look like? Here’s what you can expect:

  1. The First Session: Laying the Foundation

In our first session, we’ll spend some time getting to know each other. I’ll ask about your background, the challenges you’re facing, and your goals for therapy. I’ll also explain how therapy works, including confidentiality and what you can expect in the process. This is also a great time for you to ask any questions you may have!

  1. Ongoing Sessions: Diving Deeper

Once we’ve set the foundation, each session will involve exploring what’s most present for you—whether that’s a specific issue or a deeper pattern you’re noticing. I may offer different tools, strategies, or exercises to help you process and work through things.

  1. What Happens in Between Sessions?

Therapy doesn’t just happen during our sessions—it’s a process that continues outside of the therapy room. I may give you “homework,” such as practicing new skills, reflecting on your thoughts and feelings, or journaling. This helps you integrate the work we do together into your daily life.

  1. What If You’re Not Sure What to Expect?

If you’re feeling uncertain or nervous about what therapy is all about, you’re not alone. Many people feel unsure about therapy before they begin, and that’s completely normal. I want to reassure you that there’s no “right” way to experience therapy. It’s a personal journey, and the pace and process are completely up to you.

Here’s What You Can Expect If You’re Feeling Uncertain:

  1. It’s Okay to Feel Uncertain: Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s okay not to know exactly what to expect. You don’t need to have everything figured out before we begin—therapy is a space for exploration, and it’s normal not to have all the answers right away.

  2. Therapy Is a Process, Not a Quick Fix: Therapy isn’t about providing instant solutions. It’s a process that takes time. We’ll work together, step by step, to explore what’s going on for you and how we can create lasting change. You might not leave every session with a perfect solution, and that’s okay—it’s all part of the journey.

  3. You Won’t Be Judged: I understand that you might worry about being judged for what you say or how you feel. But I want you to know that therapy is a safe space where you can express yourself freely. There’s no judgment here—every feeling, experience, and struggle is valid.

  4. You Don’t Need a “Big Problem” to Start Therapy: Therapy isn’t just for people going through crises. Whether you’re struggling with stress, seeking personal growth, or navigating life transitions, therapy can help. You don’t need to have a “big problem” to benefit from it.

  5. You’ll Be Supported Every Step of the Way: If at any point you’re unsure or confused about what’s happening in therapy, don’t hesitate to ask. I’m here to guide you through the process and ensure you feel comfortable. Therapy is a collaborative effort, and I’m here to support you.

It’s Important to Feel Comfortable

Therapy is a space where you should feel heard, supported, and understood. It’s crucial that you feel comfortable with me as your therapist. If, at any point, you feel that we’re not the right fit, that’s okay. It’s completely acceptable to explore finding another therapist who might be a better match for you. Your comfort and trust are essential to the success of our work together.

If you ever feel uncertain or want a recommendation for another therapist, I’m happy to help guide you in that process. Your well-being comes first, and it’s important that you feel supported in the best way possible.

Therapy Is a Unique and Personal Journey

Every therapy journey is unique. It’s your path, your healing, and your growth. You’ll be the one leading the way, and I’ll be here to guide and support you along the way. Whether you’re processing past experiences, building new skills, or working on improving your mental well-being, therapy provides the space for you to do so in a meaningful and lasting way.

The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone. Together, we’ll explore, heal, and work toward a brighter, more fulfilling future.
